Forbes State Forest
Westmoreland County, PA
Forbes State Forest is located
along Pennsylvania's Laurel Ridge. There are three principal areas of
the forest with designated cross-country ski trails. The so-called
northern section lies north of the PA Turnpike, accessed by a road off
of US-30. Trails in the southern section are divided into two
sections by PA-31, with parking areas off roads just to the west
of Kooser State Park. (See the trailhead link below.)
The trails are not groomed and, for the most part, require intermediate or beginner skiing skills. Warming huts are located near the parking area for the northern section and along the trail on the portion of the southern section accessed from Tunnel Road.
In recent years the trail markings were not always well maintained and were a bit difficult to follow in some areas.
There is no fee for use of these trails.
